» What do I need to take the test?

You need the "Company" name/code and the "Test ID", and a web-browser. The HR manager from the hiring company has the "Company" code and the "Test ID".

The "Company" is the name for the hiring company; it is most likely be an abbreviation (or an acronym) of the company name.
For example: GTomato, IBM, Intel, NASA, Apple, etc.

The "Test ID" is the open-position abbreviation (job listing) followed by a dash, "-", and a number.
For example: CProgrammer-01234, SfwEng-0123, SrProg-0123, BPITW-0111, etc.

There is no white-space characters in either the "Company" code or the "Test ID". Both are case sensitive.

Special Note: As described by the "SUBSCRIPTION AGRREMENT", we, GreenTomato Software llc., can not give out the "Company" name and corresponding "Test ID" to the users/candidates. Therefore, if you don't know the "Company" code and the "Test ID", please contact the HR manager from the hiring company.

» How do I prepare for the test? Are there any good tips?

The pre-hire tests have three (3) distinct sections:

  • » The Syntax test tests the basic understanding of the computer language syntax, such as PHP, C++, Java, etc. Some of the Syntax tests could have up to two computer languages.

The HR Manager could choose from 10, 20 or 30 questions, and he/she also chooses the maximum time limits of 10, 20 or 30 minutes for each test. The timer will be displayed on the "Title" bar and the "Status" bar, while you are taking the test.

These questions are thoroughly researched and written by experienced programmers, and so, here are a few good tips.

Good Tips: During the Syntax test, we recommend that you have your favorite computer reference book(s) nearby. We recommend this because we are testing your mastery of the computer language(s) and not your memorization.

There could be more then one correct answer to any question, so you must remember to select all the correct choices. There is no partial credit.

Lastly, if you failed this test then you will not be advanced to the next test level, the Logic test.   [Sample Syntax Test]

  • » The Logic test quantifies the level of experience of the programmer.

Since there is always more then one way to code a feature, a function, or a method, experienced programmers know which logic serves best in which context.

These are coding problems that you will encounter in everyday programming; we did.

The HR Manager could choose from 10, 20 or 30 questions, and he/she chooses the maximum time limits of 10, 20 or 30 minutes for each test. The timer will be displayed on the "Title" bar and the "Status" bar, while you are taking the test.

Good Tips: There is no syntax error in any of the logic questions.

The logic questions are not trick questions, simply coding problems that you are likely to encounter in your day-to-day programming.

Relax and double-check your answers before submitting. We [programmers] notice that when we are relaxed the answer(s) to some of the logic questions simply pop-out.

There could be more then one correct answer, so you must remember to select all the correct choices. There is no partial credit.

Lastly, if you failed this test then you will not be advanced to the next test level, the TG-Factor test.   [Sample Logic Test]

  • » The TG-Factor test measures the effectiveness of the programmer in an organization.

Here is where we separate the men from the boys. To be a Top Gun programmer, you must see the bigger picture and be able to articulate technical concepts to top level Executives as well as to fellow programmers. In other words, if you want to be the leader of the pack, you must command respect from the rank-and-file and navigate the coporate world.

No other application has this TG-Factor Test. It is conceived and written by our Top Gun Chief Software Architect.

Good Tips: Put the team first. What is good for the team - and the project - is most likely to be the correct answer.

Read each choice carefully because the answer is in there.

There could be more then one correct answer, so you must remember to select all the correct choices. There is no partial credit.

If you passed this final test, you will see the Top Gun certificate page. Please print this page out, or write down the certificate number. [Sample TG-Factor Test]

» What will happen after I take the test?

If you fail, take a deep breath and contact the HR manager to see whether it is OK to take the test again. Taking the pre-hire test multiple times could disqualify you.

If you succeed and achieve Top Gun status, then an email is sent to the HR manager. A big congratulations to you because very few programmers actually achieve Top Gun ranking.

However, this alone does not guarantee you will be hired. It is up to the HR manager to call you in for a face-to-face interview or not, and it is up to the HR manager from the hiring company to make the final decision.

» What is the "Top Gun" ranking?

The ranking are as follows:

"Newbie" ranking is assigned to a candidate/user that took the test and failed the Syntax test, the first level test.

"Rookie" ranking is assigned to a candidate/user that passed the Syntax test but failed the Logic Test.

"Qualified" ranking is assigned to a candidate/user that passed the Syntax and Logic tests, but failed the TG-Factor (effectiveness) test.

"Top Gun" ranking is assigned to a candidate/user that has passed all three tests: the Syntax test, the Logic test, and the TG-Factor (effectiveness) test.

It is the highest ranking. Very few programmers actually achieve Top Gun ranking. Every Top Gun candidate/user will received a "Top Gun" certificate number.

» What is the honor system?

As good programmers, it is in our nature to hack into applications and see how they tick. Then again, as a good programmer, that is where it stops.

Even with our best efforts, there might be a way to cheat our tests. Therefore, rather than spending endless programming-time blocking every conceivable method of cheating, we rely on the principle that governs all science, "Honesty".

That is not to say this program is easily hack. If you are a good-enough programmer to hack this application, then please contact us and tell us how you did it. We appreciate your candor.

» Why is the test in English? Can I take the test in my native language?

Most (if not all) of the computer languages (keywords) are in English, and the majority of the programs are also written in English. So it is natural that the tests are in English.

Please contact us if you think the tests should be in other languages. We would like to hear from you.

» How is the test graded?

For each test, your answers will be compared with correct answers. For each question, there could be more then one correct answer, so you must select all the correct choices to get a credit for that question. There is no partial credit.

Your test score will then be compared against the minimum score (in percentage), set by the HR manager. If you passed, you will advance to the next test level.

All grades are final as stipulated in the "TERMS OF USE".
